After a long, 14-month wait, the popular Kalalau Trail has finally reopened! In one hike, you can enjoy the best that the Island of Kauai has to offer. After record flooding in April 2018, the park was closed due to extensive damage. However, inspiring efforts by the Kalalau trail group and local volunteers brought one of the world’s most incredible hiking trails back to the public again

Insider Trail Travel Tips:

Parking and shuttle access:  Along with the excitement surrounding the reopening of the Kalalau trail there have also have been some big changes.

IN THE KNOW: The Park now requires, in advance, a parking pass or shuttle ticket to gain access.

Be advised, both the parking pass and shuttle tickets become available for purchase 14 days in advance and sell out VERY quickly. You can book both here two weeks in advance:  https://www.gohaena.com/

Also, if you plan on proceeding past the two mile mark of Hanakāpīʻai valley you will need to possess a valid camping permit even if you don’t plan to camp. Camping Permits can be purchased at district offices or online at this web site: https://camping.ehawaii.gov/camping/welcome.html

 

Best of the Kalalau Trail : 

Located at the northern point of the Napali coast, Ke’e beach (pronounced Keh-AY) is considered the beginning of the famous Napali Coast. It has awe-inspiring snorkeling, especially during the summer months and is the perfect place to watch a sunset.

The Kalalau Trail takes you to numerous beaches, including the rugged shore of Hanakapai’ai Beach complete with sea caves and crystal blue waters.

The hike to Hanakoa Falls is six miles and, make note can be a challenging climb. However at the end you will be rewarded with the majestic 300 foot-waterfall. The hike also requires the valid Camping permit so make sure to have it on hand.

Bring plenty of water, good hiking shoes, a bathing suit for a dip, and a camera to capture memories that will last a lifetime. Be prepared to see some of the most incredible views the world has to offer!
